Nature-based coastal flood protection: Lessons from the Caribbean and the Philippines
Research Paper
This study reviews four nature-based coastal protection projects in the Caribbean and the Philippines, including reef-based breakwaters, mangrove restoration, and sediment-trapping structures. It shows that these measures can reduce wave impacts, support biodiversity, and strengthen local livelihoods when they are well adapted to local ecological and social conditions. The authors also note challenges such as limited funding, technical constraints, and governance gaps that can hinder long-term success. The study offers practical lessons for coastal regions and small island states seeking sustainable strategies to address sea-level rise and storm risks.
